NUWARA ELIYA

NUWARA ELIYA

Nuwara Eliya which means the “city of lights” is also the city of eternal spring, where the air is pure, cool and distilled up through 1,884 meters; windswept peaks lie shrouded in mist, while gaily clad tea pluckers wind their way among tea bushes. Listen to the wild music of the water falls.

Nestling below Pidurutalagala , Sri Lanka ‘s highest mountain, this hill station offers beauty unlimited. Streams are filled with trout and the air is cold. Due to tropical location no snow falls, but hail is not unknown. A visit to the Trout Hatchery, boating on Lake Gregory , are a must and the park is wonderful in the flower months of May and June. Nearby are the Hakgala Botanical Gardens.

Once the favourite hill stations of the British, Nuwara Eliya , still retains the vestiges of Empire: a blend of Tudor and Georgian architecture, gabled roofs, immaculate lawns with rose bushes and moss-covered gravestones. Soak up the quaint atmosphere by visiting the Hill Club – by jove, there’s a golf course, tennis courts, even copies of Country Life here – or visit the botanic gardens and tea plantations in the surrounding hills.

This resort offers visitors many attractions: golf, fishing, boating, hiking and mountain climbing – the setting, a nostalgic reminder of the English country-side
